On November 3-4, 2022, the PI Zara Pogossian and ArmEn team members Michele Nucciotti, Elisa Pruno and Leonardo Squilloni took part in the First Convegno Armenistico Pisano (Conference of Armenian Studies in Pisa), organized by Prof. Alessandro Orengo and Dr. Irene Tinti (University of Pisa) in the Aula Magna Storica of La Sapienza Palace in Pisa (Program). The PI Pogossian, together with Professors Aldo Ferrari, Alessandro Orengo and Anna Sirinian was part of the scientific committee of the conference (abstracts).
Pogossian presented a paper entitled “Il concetto di ‘città’ nelle fonti armene e la fondazione di Ani” (The idea of “city” in the Armenian sources and the foundation of Ani), based on written sources such as Movses Khorenats‘i and others, as well as case studies (among others Dvin and Ani). Her talk pointed out the importance of defensive walls in the construction of the city, highlighting how these structures not only affected the architectural and topographical features of urban centers, but were vital for the idea itself of a city, marking the difference with other types of settlements, such as գիւղ (giwgh - village), աւան (awan - bourgh) or քաղաքագիւղ (k‘aghak‘agiugh - city-village).
Michele Nucciotti, Elisa Pruno and Leonardo Squilloni presented the results of the first archaeological season of excavations on the site of Dvin, as well as the preliminary results of the second one, carried on in October.
Last but not the least, the first volume of the new on-line open access journal Armeniaca. International Journal of Armenian Studies was presented to the participants and attendees of the conference. The ArmEn PI Zara Pogossian is one of the co-founders and Editors-in-chief of the Journal, together with Professors Aldo Ferrari (University Ca’ Foscari – Venice), Alessandro Orengo (University of Pisa) and Anna Sirinian (University of Bologna). The journal, as the editors remarked, aims to provide a new open access venue for publications in Armenian studies. It is open to all areas of Armenian studies and adopts a double-blind peer review system. It is fully open access.
